Why HorseOfMine?
The vision for HOM is two-fold; the first is to offer the option of horse ownership and all that it involves to anyone who wants it, making it affordable, fulfilling and educational. Making it affordable will allow hundreds of thousands of households to participate in the human-horse bond who could not be involved before; making it fulfilling and will assure that through the generations horses will be nurtured with the love and connection only they can offer; making it educational will assure that sub-par horse care and neglect will be minimized as these new horse enthusiasts will understand horse nutrition, care requirements, and physiology of the horse much better than the past horse-loving generations.
The second is to create a supportive community of like-minded horse facilities that can earn a profit and keep their farms, and their horses, without risk of closing down due to financial problems. Keeping these facilities up and running is imperative to the longevity of the horse-human relationship, now as well as in the future.
What does it cost?
There are two fees - the "online ownership fee" and the "live video streaming fee." The online ownership fee is annual and costs $99.00. With it you get your name on a plaque attached to the stall door of your horse, a digital picture of your horse (which you can order prints from) and a certificate stating that your are a "virtual owner" of the horse. Some may c hoose not to own a virtual horse and for them the cost is $9.95 per month to view all horses 24/7. For those who own their virtual horse he/she will have access to all live video streaming 24/7 for a reduced rate of $4.95 per month. In additional, streaming to cell phones will be availabe for an additional $10.00 per month and treats for horses are available ala carte. View the member section for details.
Is my online horse available for purchase?
Yes, all adopted horses can be bought and sold. So, if you love your horse and want to buy it then you may consider a trip to the farm to ride. Then, upon full inspection you can buy the horse.
What if the horse I own online is bought by someone?
All horses in the HorseOfMine program are owned outright by farms themselves and not by individual owners. Sometimes horses owned by farms are then sold to individual owners and the horse is removed from the HOM program. In the event that this happens, you will be able to select a new horse to buy and follow, transferring your membership and ownership fee to another horse for of course, no charge. You will receive a new certificate, picture and your name plaque will be moved to your new horse. Your viewing package allows you to view your new horse as before.
Can I visit my horse in real time?
Yes, all horses in the program are available for you to visit and ride (for an additional cost, set by the farm that owns the horse). Contact details are available for each adopted horse and arrangements can be made for your visit. However, each virtual owner can make a birthday visit for no additional charge, one time per year (this does not include accommodations). That special day can be spent with the horse, caring for it, riding, or just visiting.
Can I communicate with my horse's handler and can my horse communicate with me through the handler?
Yes, each horse in the program has a handler that is responsible for blogging with virtual owners. You can blog back as well. It's easy - see sample blog: http://nachogrande.ning.com/
